It also refers to works of art (paintings, drawings and prints) that include pieces of collage within them. Collage was made popular in western art history by Pablo Picasso and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cubism\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Cubism\">cubists<\/a>. The German artist Kurt Schwitters used collage as the dominant formal element in his works from the 1930\u2019s. His work <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artworks\/schwitters-opened-by-customs-t00214\">Opened by Customs<\/a><\/i> is an excellent example of the importance of collage to the modern art movement in Europe before World War II.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"objectives\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeru.org\/art102\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru_course\/idevices\/Icon_objectives.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Collage and Artists<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<div class=\"thumb tleft\">\n<div class=\"thumbinner thumbnail\" style=\"width:352px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/WikiEducator.org\/File:Seattle_Mural_Amphitheater_1.jpg\" class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/WikiEducator.org\/images\/thumb\/1\/15\/Seattle_Mural_Amphitheater_1.jpg\/350px-Seattle_Mural_Amphitheater_1.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" class=\"thumbimage img-responsive\"><\/a>  <\/p>\n<div class=\"thumbcaption\">Paul Horiuchi, Mural Amphitheatre, 1962. Glass mosaic.  The Seattle Center, Seattle, Washington, US<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Artist Romare Bearden used collage to comment on urban life and the black experience in America. His <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beardenfoundation.org\/artlife\/beardensart\/collage\/artwork\/patchwork_quilt_i.shtml\">Patchwork Quilt<\/a><\/i> presents us with a figure in profile reminiscent of <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/works_of_art\/collection_database\/egyptian_art\/fragment_of_wall_painting_from_the_tomb_of_sebekhotpe\/objectview_enlarge.aspx?page=1&amp;sort=6&amp;sortdir=asc&amp;keyword=wall%20painting&amp;fp=1&amp;dd1=10&amp;dd2=0&amp;vw=1&amp;collID=10&amp;OID=100001220&amp;vT=1&amp;hi=0&amp;\">Egyptian painting<\/a>. The starkness of the black figure surrounded by a collage of patterned fabric and dark background color creates a shallow space and dynamic composition. <\/p>\n<p>The Japanese American artist Paul Horiuchi began as a painter but by mid career used collage almost exclusively. <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.henryartcollections.org\/detail.php?t=objects&amp;type=all&amp;f=&amp;s=america&amp;record=115\">Mesa<\/a><\/i> from 1960 is an abstract rendition of the geologic feature: an isolated hill with steeply sloping sides and a flat top. Horiuchi\u2019s art is a successful blending of the formal elements of cubist ideas with the oriental aesthetic of his Japanese heritage.
