With every mark the artist&#8217;s hand makes, we see how quickly, which direction, what kind of energy it leaves. In fact, when we begin discussing history you will see that there is a big difference between work in which the artist&#8217;s hand is visible and work that is purely gestural; that is, abstract or non-objective work where the focus is on the application of the medium to the artwork. Often we have trouble with the purely gestural, because this contradicts ideas we have about skill and talent. Also, the invention of the photograph has greatly changed our ideas about what looks correct. A good example of this idea can be seen by comparing the image at right with an <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nga.gov\/feature\/rothko\/classic2a.shtm\">image by Mark Rothko<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Morning Mist<\/i> image is a digital photo of a foggy landscape, while the link is a painting by the Abstract Expressionist painter Mark Rothko. When you compare the two, you see that there are similarities; bands of complementary color spread horizontally across the surface in layers. Yet Rothko\u2019s painting is much more reductive than the photo. The space is flat, sitting right on the surface of the canvas, whereas in the photo you get a feeling of receding space as areas of color overlap each other. This similarity is not coincidental. As a young man Rothko lived in Portland, Oregon, and hiked the Cascade Mountains. On hikes to higher elevations, he saw the landscape and atmosphere around him and was especially moved by the colors in the sky near the horizon just before sunrise and just after sunset.\n<\/p>\n<p>Now you can imagine these memories reflected in Rothko\u2019s series of abstract &#8220;color field&#8221; paintings. It\u2019s simplistic to say this was Rothko\u2019s only influence. As an artist he explored painting styles emerging out of Surrealism, including automatic drawing and more complex <i>mythomorphic<\/i> techniques. But it\u2019s hard to deny that to some extent his paintings are based on what he saw. We can see this in a comparison of a nineteenth century photo of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.getty.edu:30008\/getty_images\/digitalresources\/gary_edwards\/jpegs\/grl_92r84_04-01-04.jpg\">Acropolis<\/a> in Athens, Greece, and the image from the series <i>The Course of Empire<\/i> by Thomas Cole titled <i>The Consummation<\/i>. Both show a commanding view of a classical landscape. The photo mimics Cole\u2019s painting in formal terms, emphasizing the grandeur of the architecture within a vast expanse of space.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, realist paintings from the 19th century were sometimes ridiculed for being too lifelike but not \u2018ideal\u2019 enough. Theodore Gericault\u2019s Raft of the Medusa is an example: read <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.louvre.fr\/en\/oeuvre-notices\/raft-medusa\">A Hint of Scandal<\/a> as to why such a realistic, powerful painting could be caught up in controversy. The use of abstraction and gesture as subject matter runs counter to traditional avenues for finding meaning. It is in this gestural approach, however, that much of the grace and delicacy, as well as power, anger or other emotions can be conveyed. In other words, it is the <i>application<\/i> of the elements that can give us clues to a work\u2019s meaning. If we then take the formal quality of application (what kind of line, how the paint is applied, etc) and combine it with a specific subject you can discover a meaning from the combination of these visual effects.\n<\/p>\n<p>When looked at from this perspective, the paintings of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abstract_Expressionism\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Abstract Expressionism\">Expressionists<\/a> become more meaningful. In particular, the art of <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/awc\/joan-mitchell.html\">Joan Mitchell<\/a> captures the exuberance and energy that the application of paint can achieve (see <a href=\"\/How_art_speaks\/Critical_perspectives#Formalist_criticism\" title=\"How art speaks\/Critical perspectives\">Formalist criticism<\/a> in <i>Critical perspectives<\/i> later on  in this unit).\n<\/p>\n<p>This bridge between <b>formal quality<\/b> and <b>subject matter<\/b> can be applied to meaning in works of art from many cultures. Gesture and pattern combine to enhance the meaning of more decorative works like the paintings from a <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/works_of_art\/collection_database\/arts_of_africa_oceania_and_the_americas\/listview.aspx?page=7&amp;sort=0&amp;sortdir=asc&amp;keyword=&amp;fp=6&amp;dd1=5&amp;dd2=0&amp;hi=0&amp;ov=0\">Ceremonial House<\/a> ceiling from the Sepik region of New Guinea. The ceremonial house was built as a place for spirits to dwell. The paintings themselves indicate abstracted images of faces making fierce gestures, suns and female genitalia, all in reference to the spirits surrounding the ceremony taking place inside.\n<\/p>\n<p><br style=\"clear:both;\">\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Formal analysis<\/b> is the discussion of a work of art according to the elements of design (size, color, line etc.). You should start with the circumstance of how you are viewing the work; you might record that you are looking at a color reproduction of a certain size, but provide the actual measurements of the work the artist intended the viewer to see. Start with the other large ideas, if the work is a painting identify the shape and whether the work is horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait). If the work is a sculpture identify the medium and size and whether the work is a relief, a freestanding work or attached to something (a wall). Progress to describing further details such as the use figures and then proceed to analysis the work according to the design elements.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHere is an example of a formal analysis of <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/images.art.com\/images\/products\/regular\/12267000\/12267528.jpg\">Velasquez\u2019s Mercury and Argus, 1659<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<p>If one were to stand before Velasquez\u2019s masterpiece <i>Mercury and Argus<\/i> (1659), at the Prado Museum, one would be impressed by the size (248 x 127 cm) of the long horizontal work. It is an oil on canvas, which features three figures from the antique myth: Io, the white heifer stands behind the figures of Mercury stalking on the left, and the shepherd Argos slumbering on the right. Argos, who had one hundred eyes, has been put to sleep by the soft notes from the Pipes of Pan, seen in the lower right foreground. His body has been made limp with sleep as his head bows and his bodily limbs remain limp and curving. Mercury, on his mission from Jove, is painted alert, angular and menacing as he moves in for the kill, his drawn sword ready for the decapitation on the slumbering shepherd. The scene takes place at dusk where the last sun rays illuminate golden highlights on the figures against creeping darkness.
