This section of our course text explains how both active listening<\/b> and reading<\/b> support effective communication, and gives tips on how to apply active listening skills when discussing difficult subjects.<\/p>\n

Now read Section 4.1<\/a> in Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking<\/i> (pages 70 – 73 in the PDF version<\/a>). This text describes the difference between listening and hearing, and various benefits of active listening. <\/p>\n

Based on this reading and on your own experience, think about what barriers there can be to successful active listening or active reading. How might you overcome these? <\/p>\n
