The five general presentation purposes are to inform, persuade, demonstrate, entertain, or perform a ceremonial function. The specific purpose involves the content and context of your speech. When you are clear on these things, you should be able to state the objective of your speech in one sentence.

Key strategies to select and narrow your topic effectively include assessing your abilities, audience, topic appeal and appropriateness, and managing your time well. You will also need to think about how to make your topic interesting and relevant to your target audience in ways that support your general purpose.

The final topic reading describes how to focus on your key presentation points, plan, and organize your information search, evaluate your sources for reliability and credibility, and practise ethical communication. You can find two speech outlines formats in Chapter 12.4 (Unit 7).

Recommended: Do the Introductory exercises with the modifications suggested here. First, do a self-inventory of your personal interests, experiences, and values. Next identify your top three areas where you have knowledge or experience that link to your business goals. Then, ask some friends, or colleagues in this course, which of these three areas they find most interesting, and track their responses and any demographic commonalities they share.

Comment on this activitity.

You must be logged in to post to WEnotes.

Note: Your comment will be displayed in the course feed.

Later in the course you will be challenged to create and deliver an audience-centred informative presentation on a business topic of your choice. Authentic communication is crucial to engaging people. If you are truly interested in your topic, and provide credible information, you will likely spark audience interest too.

Also, do an Internet search to find answers to the world knowledge questions in the second Introductory exercise. You will notice that global demographics have changed since your text was published. The aim of this activity is to raise your awareness of dimensions of diversity in your own audiences.

Complete all the 10.2 and 10.3 chapter exercises, which ask you to practise evaluating various information sources and ethical communication. These exercises will also help you get started on planning, researching, and organizing your informative presentation.

            ← Previous

            Next →

["post-1004","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
