A useful way to do this is to draw a map of the system (be it an organisation, community, project or a whole value chain) that you are assessing using the Natural Step&#8217;s fours system conditions.  The map can show the flow of materials, energy, organisations, people and money involved.<\/p>\n<p>Using an organisation as an example, the process involves asking a series of questions:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> In what ways is the organisation contributing to the systematic accumulation in nature and natural systems of materials that have been extracted from the earth\u2019s crust?\n<\/li>\n<li> In what ways is the organisation contributing to the systematic accumulation in nature and natural systems of synthetic and man-made materials produced by society?\n<\/li>\n<li> In what ways is the organisation contributing to the systematic damage, degradation and destruction of natural systems by physical means?\n<\/li>\n<li> In what ways is the organisation contributing to creating conditions that undermine people\u2019s ability to meet their needs?\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br style=\"clear:both;\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"activity\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeru.org\/csf102\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru_course\/idevices\/Icon_activity.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>WEnote activity<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>A comprehensive guide for this process has been written by The Natural Step in Canada and adapted with New Zealand case studies &#8211; <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naturalstep.org\/sites\/all\/files\/TNS_NZ_Sustainability_Planning%20Guide%20Print.pdf\">Planning for Sustainability &#8211; A Starter Guide<\/a>.
