In this section, you have the opportunity to:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Develop hands-on skills searching selected web-sites to find examples of images and videos using open licences\n<\/li>\n<li> Familiarise yourself with sites that provide filters for content using Creative Commons licences\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list provided on this page does not include every relevant web-site. The core skill for teachers is to learn, when visiting sites, how to look for functionality that provides filters for Creative Commons content. If you find sites that don&#8217;t provide this functionality, it is unlikely that your search for openly licensed content will be successful.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"The_Australasian_swamp-hen\">The Australasian swamp-hen<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australasian_swamphen\">Australasian swamp-hen<\/a> (<i>Porphyrio melanotus<\/i>), the image displayed on the top of this page, is a species of swamp-hen (or swamphen) living in the Pacific region including for example, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and a number of other Pacific Islands.\n<\/p>\n<p>In New Zealand it&#8217;s known as the &#8216;Pukeko&#8217;, which can be used as an alternative search term.\n<\/p>\n<p>In the following short activities, you&#8217;ll search for &#8216;Swamphen&#8217; images or videos that have open licences:\n<\/p>\n<table class=\"oeru1 table table-striped\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Activity 1\n<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"#Using_Flickr\">Using Flickr<\/a>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Activity 2\n<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"#Using_CC_Search\">Using CC Search<\/a>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Activity 3\n<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"#Using_YouTube\">Using YouTube<\/a>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Using_Flickr\">Using Flickr<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/\">Flickr<\/a> is an image hosting service that is popular with amateur and professional photographers. Flickr supports search capabilities for images tagged with Creative Commons licences.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"activity\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeru.org\/ds4oers\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru-course\/idevices\/Icon_activity.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Activity 1<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose<\/b>: To gain experience using the &#8216;Any licence&#8217; filter on Flickr to find CC licensed images.\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Go to: <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external free\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/\">https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li> Search (all images):\n<ul>\n<li> In the search bar, type &#8216;Australasian Swamphen&#8217;, press &#8216;Enter&#8217; &#8211; scan the results\n<\/li>\n<li> In the search bar, type &#8216;Pukeko&#8217;, press &#8216;Enter&#8217; &#8211; scan the results. Do you notice any differences?\n<\/li>\n<li> Click on an image you find interesting. YouTube hosts videos searchable by two licence types:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> A custom all-rights-reserved, standard YouTube licence, and\n<\/li>\n<li> Videos published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>YouTube videos published under the standard YouTube licence do <i>not<\/i> qualify as OER and cannot legally be downloaded for re-use off-line. However, there is a growing inventory of OER, CC-BY licensed videos on the site.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"activity\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeru.org\/ds4oers\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru-course\/idevices\/Icon_activity.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Activity 3<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose<\/b>: To gain experience using the &#8216;Filter&#8217; &#8211;&gt; &#8216;Creative Commons&#8217; option on YouTube.\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Go to <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external free\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li> In the search bar, type &#8216;Australasian swamphen&#8217; and &#8216;Enter&#8217; &#8211; scroll down through the results.\n<\/li>\n<li> Go back to the top of the page and click on the &#8216;Filters&#8217; link. Under &#8216;Features&#8217;, select &#8216;Creative Commons&#8217;\n<\/li>\n<li> The results will show all the videos labelled with a Creative Commons licence.\n<\/li>\n<li> Click on a video you find interesting. In the description that appears below the video, click on the &#8216;Show more&#8217; link to verify the Licence.
