We will begin to introduce philosophical themes and how these can inform our understanding and interpretation of science.\n<\/p>\n<p>These three lectures (around 10 minutes each) introduce some of the philosophical themes relevant to this unit, including the following:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Argument structure and the <b>role of values<\/b> in arguments\n<\/li>\n<li> If it matters that humans are radically re-shaping the Earth, <b>why does it matter<\/b>?\n<\/li>\n<li> Arguments that involve <b>ought<\/b> claims and how to understand those claims\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Philosophical_Themes_2\">Philosophical Themes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In this video, we explore the importance of a well-structured argument and its impact on our ability to understand and act on information. We also explore the impact of our values and how our values can augment our understanding or ability to act on information. This video is important in helping you to understand why when we are presented with one or two scientific facts, the human population can have so many responses to these facts. We consider the role of:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Subjective preferences\n<\/li>\n<li>Objective truths\n<\/li>\n<li>Instrumental or Intrinsic values. You will also engage with a <b>thought experiment<\/b> which is designed to uncover your internal values and perspectives, in relation to Humans as Earthshapers. Just before exiting the scene, Fred destroys all of the planet&#8217;s geology and biology.
