This led to international agreement to phase out the use of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting substances. Today, the level of ozone in the atmosphere has stabilised, and the issue is widely regarded as having been successfully addressed by the international community. This raises the question: are there lessons that can be learned from the successful resolution of this issue that might aid in addressing other global challenges? Explore this question further in the following video and reading.

Watch:

The Antarctic Ozone Hole — From Discovery to Recovery, a Scientific Journey (16:36)

Read:

Chris Peloso, ‘Crafting an International Climate Change Protocol: Applying the Lessons Learned from the Success of the Montreal Protocol and the Ozone Depletion Problem’, Journal of Land Use 25: 2, pp. 305-29, Available at:

http://law-wss-01.law.fsu.edu/journals/landuse/vol25_2/peloso.pdf

            ← Previous

            Next →

The discovery of the depletion of the ozone layer caused global alarm in the 1970s and 1980s.
