This is the third of three micro-courses that jointly constitute the OERu Introduction to Psychology I course. In this micro-course you will learn about different states of consciousness, definitions and measures of intelligence, and more complex forms of memory and thinking.\n<\/p>\n<p>This micro-course is intended for students who are interested in gaining foundational knowledge about basic psychological processes, including those who wish to pursue a Baccalaureate degree in Psychology. It can also be useful to anyone interested in the Social Sciences and can contribute to a Bachelor of General Studies.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"What_will_I_learn\">What will I learn<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By the end of this micro-course you will be able to:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Define change blindness and recognize new examples\n<\/li>\n<li> Define consciousness\n<\/li>\n<li> Summarize the easy problem of consciousness\n<\/li>\n<li> Summarize the hard problem of consciousness and how it relates to \u201ccorrelation is not causation\u201d\n<\/li>\n<li> Define blindsight\n<\/li>\n<li> Explain the importance of Libet\u2019s study on voluntary movement\n<\/li>\n<li> Explain the principle of dual processing\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the different stages of sleep and their typical characteristics\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the purpose of sleep and the evidence for that conclusion\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe some of the characteristics of hypnosis\n<\/li>\n<li> Explain the evidence that hypnosis affects confidence rather than accuracy of recall\n<\/li>\n<li> Summarize the two theories to explain hypnosis\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the benefits of meditation\n<\/li>\n<li> Define cognitive psychology\n<\/li>\n<li> Distinguish concepts and schemas\n<\/li>\n<li> Identify problem-solving strategies, including algorithms and heuristics\n<\/li>\n<li> Recognize some common roadblocks to effective problem solving including five types of decision bias\n<\/li>\n<li> Define language and describe the components of language\n<\/li>\n<li> Explain the relationship between language and thinking\n<\/li>\n<li> Discuss the three basic functions of memory\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the three memory stores and recognize new examples of each\n<\/li>\n<li> Distinguish between the different kinds of long-term memory\n<\/li>\n<li> Explain the brain areas involved in memory\n<\/li>\n<li> Compare and contrast the two types of amnesia\n<\/li>\n<li> Discuss the unreliability of eyewitness testimony\n<\/li>\n<li> Identify some of the ways in which memory fails us in predictable ways\n<\/li>\n<li> Compare and contrast the two types of interference\n<\/li>\n<li> Recognize and apply memory-enhancing strategies to improve your studying\n<\/li>\n<li> Summarize the different intelligence theories\n<\/li>\n<li> Define emotional intelligence and creativity\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the history of the use of IQ tests\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the purposes and benefits of intelligence testing\n<\/li>\n<li> Explain the different variables that contribute to and influence IQ scores\n<\/li>\n<li> Describe the difference between a learning disability and a developmental disorder\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"What.27s_involved\">What&#8217;s involved<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li> Completing readings\n<\/li>\n<li> Watch videos\n<\/li>\n<li> Completing elearning activities\n<\/li>\n<li> Writing an exam (for learners taking the course for academic credit)\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"What_prequisites_should_I_have.2C_if_any.3F\">What prequisites should I have, if any?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Anyone is free to participate in this course; however, it is designed for those who meet <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpu.ca\/calendar\/2018-19\/ar\/englishproficiency.html#ug\">Kwantlen Polytechnic University\u2019s English Language Proficiency Requirement.<\/a> In addition, an internet connection and basic web browsing skills are recommended with the ability to create a blog and microblog account (instructions and self-study tutorials provided.)\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"What_micro-courses_are_required_for_course_credit.3F\">What micro-courses are required for course credit?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Learners are required to complete three micro-courses to gain credit for Introduction to Psychology 1:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Foundations of Psychological Science\n<\/li>\n<li> Evolution, Behaviorism &amp;
