We can promote a positive climate in our classroom by:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Providing opportunities for small-group learning and interaction\n<\/li>\n<li> Creating a classroom charter\n<\/li>\n<li> Listening carefully\n<\/li>\n<li> Offering opportunities to be heard\n<\/li>\n<li> Providing an environment in which it&#8217;s OK to feel uncertain about things\n<\/li>\n<li> Examining our assumptions\n<\/li>\n<li> Being respectful and inclusive\n<\/li>\n<li> Considering cognitive, psychomotor (the relationship between cognitive functions and physical movement), and affective domains\n<\/li>\n<li> Being an authentic and genuine teacher\n<\/li>\n<li> Co-designing learning goals and classroom expectations\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Factors that promote a healthy classroom climate will vary depending on the people involved. It is always best to establish ground rules for a class right from the outset, so that the classroom climate standards are co-constructed and meaningful to the group as a whole.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"center\">\n<div class=\"floatnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wikieducator.org\/File:TechnologyAndEducation.jpg\" class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"TechnologyAndEducation.jpg\" src=\"\/\/wikieducator.org\/images\/3\/3b\/TechnologyAndEducation.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"468\" class=\"img-responsive\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>What does a positive classroom climate look like online? As we&#8217;ll see in other modules, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/coi.athabascau.ca\/coi-model\/\">Community of Inquiry<\/a> is a helpful framework. Beyond just the presentation of content, described as the &#8216;cognitive presence&#8217;, it is also important to balance and consider social and teaching presences.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"nzext-box\"><b>Extend Connections<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Be aware that some ideas of a positive classroom space can come at the expense of our at-risk, disempowered, and\/or disadvantaged students. When trying to create a learning environment that is productive and inclusive for all students, consider the multiplicity of experiences students might be coming from.\n<\/p>\n<p>Some great resources that might help you think about this are:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Anthony Jack\u2019s Ted Talk <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j7w2Gv7ueOc\">&#8216;On Diversity: Access Ain\u2019t Inclusion&#8217;<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li> The New Zealand Ministry of Education&#8217;s resources on <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inclusive.tki.org.nz\/\">Inclusive Education<\/a>. Their website highlights that &#8220;Enacting Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, inclusive learning communities do the right thing by learners and communities (tika), with integrity (pono) and with care and sincerity (aroha)&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>.\n<\/li>\n<li> Peter James Hudson\u2019s interview with <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/bullybloggers.wordpress.com\/2014\/12\/17\/katherine-mckittrick-author-of-demonic-grounds-on-trigger-warnings\/\">Katherine McKittrick, author of Demonic Grounds, on Trigger Warnings<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"discussion\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeru.org\/nzext100\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru_course\/idevices\/Icon_discussion.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Creating an introductory activity<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Create an introductory activity connected to your discipline to get to know your learners. Here are some examples for more &#8216;traditional&#8217; subjects; how might you apply a similar idea?\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> In a Human Geography class, you could ask every student to identify a location from which they would want to conduct field work, and why.\n<\/li>\n<li> For English Literature, each student could discuss what fictional character they would like to invite to dinner, and why.\n<\/li>\n<li> In History, ask what figure, living or dead, would be the most interesting to have at a cocktail party, and why.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you think of some fun and interesting questions for your discipline?\n<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/forums.oeru.org\/t\/creating-an-introductory-activity\/2345\">Discussion Forum<\/a> to share your thoughts and see what others are saying.
