This knowledge is a special kind of &#8216;luggage&#8217; that can either contain essential building blocks to advance toward mastery or be a heavy weight that slows down and impedes learning.<br style=\"clear:both;\">\n<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Prior_knowledge_can_help_or_hinder_learning\">Prior knowledge can help or hinder learning<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Help<\/b>:  Using students\u2019 own experiences to generate examples helps learners to make connections and increase both retention and overall knowledge acquisition. Examples include scaffolding learning from earlier classes and experiences.\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Hinder<\/b>: Insufficient, inaccurate, or incorrect information can slow or halt learning. For example, you may have heard of the famous physics education study where scientific misconceptions persist even in <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/sciencenetlinks.com\/student-teacher-sheets\/misconceptions-about-why-seasons-occur\/\">Harvard graduates<\/a> about why we have seasons, or whether a feather dropped from a specific height would fall slower than an anvil that is dropped from the same height.\n<\/p>\n<p>Even after having learned and been tested, students persist on reverting back to &#8216;intuitive&#8217; stances about scientific misconceptions, which ultimately can hinder any potential learning that would need to scaffold onto these basic primary school principles and concepts.<br \/>\n\n<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Strategies_to_determine_and_acknowledge_students.E2.80.99_prior_knowledge\">Strategies to determine and acknowledge students\u2019 prior knowledge<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>We can identify some common misconceptions in our own discipline(s) by considering our students&#8217; prior learning, and by connecting new knowledge to prior knowledge.\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Determine your students\u2019 prior learning\n<ul>\n<li> Use diagnostic assessments such as self and peer assessments, brainstorming, and mind maps. Look for patterns amongst the students\u2019 responses.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Connect new knowledge to prior knowledge\n<ul>\n<li> Be explicit about connections\n<\/li>\n<li> Create links between courses\n<\/li>\n<li> Create links within courses\n<\/li>\n<li> Create links to other disciplines\n<\/li>\n<li> Create links to students\u2019 own knowledge and experience\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"question\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeru.org\/nzext101\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru_course\/idevices\/Icon_qmark.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Reflection<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Is there a concept that is often misunderstood in your discipline?<br \/>\nThink about why the concept is important, and what the impact\/effect is of learners not understanding this concept.
