A Dutch family in colonial Java circa 1927. The Dutch East Indies was the name given to modern day Indonesia during the period of Dutch rule. Dutch rule of this territory stretched back as far as the 16th century when Dutch ships first arrived on Indonesian shores. However, their rule was always tenuous and some parts of the Indonesian archipelago remained independent from Dutch rule.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
