Tentative economic growth in some parts of Europe collapsed after the stock market crash in New York in 1929.  The Great Depression was marked by high unemployment and great hardship in Europe, America and around the globe. Germany was particularly hard hit by the Great Depression, paving the way for the rise of Nazism.
