In China, the brutal suppression of demonstrators during the Tiananmen Square protests resulted in strong international condemnation. The breakup of Yugoslavia led to ethnic cleansing, and the worst genocidal massacre in Europe since World War Two. In East Asia, the ‘Asian Tigers’ experienced strong economic development. In many developing countries, however, such growth has been elusive.
