Readings

Read the Chapter 19 Introduction and Section 19.1 in Business Communication for Success.

These readings note that people naturally form interdependent social relationships, and that groups are a primary context for business communication. They note that group patterns are evolving as we adapt to technology-mediated communication. They also differentiate groups from teams, and discuss different types of workplace groups, how groups meet social needs beyond task goals, and the impact of group size on member participation.

Recommended: Do all the Introductory Exercises and Chapter 19.1 Exercises 1, 2 and 4. These exercises ask you to reflect on your own belonging groups, and your participation in online social media, and identify some of the primary and secondary groups in your life. What is your personal preference for group size? Is this the same or different in your primary and secondary groups?
