View the video below: Conflict Resolution in the Workplace: How to Use the Interest-Based Relational Approach, from MindTools. (You can stop the video at 2:57 mins).

This video identifies respect, listening, and focusing on issues instead of personalities as key principles of effective conflict resolution. It also describes five steps involved in using the interest-based relational approach:

  1. Set the scene
    • Advocate for discussion rather than aggression to resolve the problem
  2. Gather information
    • Find out about each person’s viewpoint – and make clear that you respect them
  3. Agree on the problem
    • Ensure there is a shared understanding of the problem
  4. Brainstorm solutions
    • Work on thinking up solutions together – make sure everyone feels equally involved
  5. Negotiate a solution
    • Try to find one that works for everyone
