A Dutch family in colonial Java circa 1927. The Dutch East Indies was the name given to modern day Indonesia during the period of Dutch rule. Dutch rule of this territory stretched back as far as the 16th century when Dutch ships first arrived on Indonesian shores. However, their rule was always tenuous and some parts of the Indonesian archipelago remained independent from Dutch rule.

At the completion of this module, you should be able to identify the perceptions Europeans held towards Asian and Pacific landscapes and peoples in the eighteenth century. You should also have a better understanding of the early patterns of European interaction with the indigenous populations of the Asia-Pacific region. Finally, you should also be able to critically evaluate the persistence of eighteenth century attitudes and values concerning the Asia-Pacific in the contemporary era.
